Acupuncture is an ancient healing therapy that has helped people for thousands of years. At Jing Acupuncture, I specialise in Five Element acupuncture—a holistic approach (treating the whole person) that goes beyond treating symptoms to restore balance to your entire being. But what exactly is Five Element acupuncture, and how can it help you feel better naturally?
What is Five Element Acupuncture?
Five Element acupuncture is based on the concept of five fundamental elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each element corresponds to specific organs, emotions, and aspects of our health. Unlike some other styles that focus primarily on symptoms, Five Element acupuncture aims to identify and treat the root cause of illness by balancing these elements within you.
Acupuncture itself involves inserting very fine, steralised needles into specific points on the body. These points form part of an internal 'network' of channels which extend from head to toe. (That's why I might needle your foot for a problem with your head!).
The practice aims to balance the flow of energy, or "qi," throughout the body. When qi flows freely, the body can heal itself more effectively.
The Five Elements And Their Meaning
Wood: Related to the liver and gallbladder; associated with growth and anger.
Fire: Connected to the heart and small intestine; linked to joy and connection.
Earth: Governs the spleen and stomach; tied to nurturing and worry.
Metal: Relates to the lungs and large intestine; connected to grief and clarity.
Water: Associated with the kidneys and bladder; linked to fear and willpower.

When one element is out of balance, it affects both physical and emotional health. Five Element acupuncture gently restores harmony amongst these elements.
What Happens at a Treatment Session?
During your session, I will assess your qi (life-force energy) through pulse diagnosis, tongue observation, and conversation. I'll always explain the treatment beforehand, so you'll know the areas I need to access and needle. I'll only ask you to remove items of clothing as required to access those areas, and cosy blankets are on hand to keep you comfortable. Treatment involves using fine needles at specific acupuncture points tailored to your unique elemental imbalances. I also incorporate supportive therapies like moxibustion, cupping, gua sha, or tui na massage as required, to enhance your healing - but we'll always discuss and agree upon any of these to be used (and yes, they're all included and you won't pay extra for these!)
Who Can Benefit from Treatment?
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) currently recommends considering acupuncture for:
Chronic Pain
Headaches and Migraines
Prostatitis symptoms
However, Five Element acupuncture is suitable for a wide range of conditions, including:
Stress, anxiety and emotional challenges
Chronic pain and inflammation
