SPRING & THE LIVER IN CHINESE MEDICINE

In Chinese medicine, the Liver is associated with the season of spring.

Important note before we move on…The Organs in Chinese medicine are defined differently to those in Western medicine. Very simply put, our organs from a Western medical view are defined by their physical structure. In Chinese medicine, the Organs (or Officials as they are sometimes known) are defined by the functions associated with it; it’s an organisation of bodily manifestations into a system of interrelated functions and relationships. So when we talk about your Liver being imbalanced or ‘sick’ (note the use of caps as we’re talking about the Chinese medicine Organ/Official), you don’t need to run to your GP for blood tests! As an acupuncturist, I’m referring to how your Liver qi is manifesting and causing you symptoms.
In Chinese medicine, the Liver is all about movement, flow, and growth—just like nature awakening after winter. It helps keep your qi (life energy) moving smoothly, maintaining harmony of movement, supports emotional balance, and plays a key role in digestion as well as overall wellbeing.
When the Liver is in harmony, you feel:
✨ Calm but motivated
✨ Clear-headed
✨ Flexible (physically & emotionally)
But when it’s out of balance… that’s when things start to feel off.
To kick-start your spring, I’ll be focussing on the Liver over the next few posts, I’ll share:
