Wowee - we really have seen Fire season at its peak! Soaring temperatures, wild fires and relentless sunshine. And after the fires, the blackened ash that returns to the soil.

As summer begins to (hopefully) soften and we move towards the next season, you may notice a subtle shift—not only in the weather and the world around us, but also in how you feel within yourself.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Five Element acupuncture, the seasons are understood as part of a continuous cycle. Each season has its own energy, rhythm and emotional qualities - and in these traditions there is actually a fifth season, Earth. It actually pops up throughout the year, as it can be denoted to the transition period between each season, as well as having its own distinct time at the end of summer, when the harvests come in and the light is golden. We are currently moving from the expansive, vibrant energy of Fire (peak summer) into the more grounded, nourishing energy of Earth (late summer).

This transition can be a wonderful opportunity to pause, take stock and gently come back to yourself.

The Fire season: connection, joy and activity

Fire is associated with summer, warmth, light, joy and connection.

Which is appropriate, as many of us turn to more social activities—spending time with friends and family, travelling and holidays, celebrating and generally packing in a lot of activities and chores into those the longer days. We naturally tend to become more active and expansive during this time of year.

When your Fire element is in balance, we may feel open, enthusiastic, warm and connected. There can be a sense of ease in social situations and a genuine enjoyment of life.

But, there can also be too much of a good thing and Fire can start to burn out.

What began as excitement can gradually become overstimulation.

You may recognise feelings such as:

  • Feeling tired but wired

  • Difficulty switching off

  • Restlessness or a busy mind

  • Being emotionally or socially overwhelmed

  • Poor sleep after a busy period

  • Feeling scattered or unable to settle

  • Irritability after too much activity

  • A sense that you need some quiet time alone

Sometimes the very things we enjoy can leave us depleted when there is simply not enough time to rest and digest our experiences.

The gentle turning towards Earth

As summer moves towards late summer, the energy begins to change.

In Five Element theory, Earth is the element of nourishment, stability, digestion and homecoming. Its season is often described as late summer—a transitional time between the outward expansion of summer and the inward movement of autumn.

Earth asks us to slow down.

Rather than constantly looking outward, we begin to turn our attention towards what sustains us. We may naturally crave more routine, nourishing food, comfortable surroundings and meaningful time with the people who make us feel grounded.

On an emotional level, balanced Earth gives us a sense of being rooted, cared for and able to care for others.

When Earth is struggling, however, we may notice a tendency towards:

  • Overthinking and rumination

  • Worrying about the future

  • Feeling mentally “stuck”

  • Fatigue or feeling depleted

  • Craving comfort foods

  • Feeling ungrounded or unsettled

  • Difficulty finding balance between caring for ourselves and caring for others

  • Taking on too much responsibility

The importance of transition

The change between seasons is not something that happens overnight.

Just as the natural world gradually shifts, our own bodies and minds may need time to adjust. We don't necessarily need to make dramatic changes. Instead, we can use this period as an invitation to gently transition.

There are simple ways to support the transition from Fire to Earth.

Try bringing a little more rhythm and routine into your days. Regular meals, nourishing foods, gentle movement and sufficient sleep can all help create a sense of stability.

Make space for connection, but don't feel that you need to say yes to everything. Earth energy reminds us that rest is not unproductive.

You might also notice the difference between activities that genuinely replenish you and those that simply keep you busy.

And perhaps most importantly, give yourself permission to slow down.

How acupuncture can support seasonal change

Five Element acupuncture looks at the individual as a whole—considering physical symptoms, emotions, energy, lifestyle and the way these different aspects interact.

Treatment is tailored to the person rather than simply treating a particular symptom.

During seasonal transitions, acupuncture can be a valuable opportunity to pause and reconnect with yourself. Treatment may focus on helping you feel more grounded, supporting your natural balance and addressing the particular ways that stress, tiredness, worry or emotional overwhelm are showing up for you.

As the pace of summer begins to soften, perhaps this is your invitation to do a little less—and give yourself a little more of what you need.

If you feel that you have been running on empty, feeling overwhelmed, or simply want to support yourself through the changing season, acupuncture can provide a quiet space to pause, reset and reconnect.

Book an appointment with Jing Acupuncture to explore how Five Element acupuncture could support you through this seasonal transition.
